Just started a new mini drawing titled: “Bison at rest”. There is just something about the great American Bison that captured my interest many years ago. Never mind that it is my State’s official animal. It is just a majestic creature.
The Native Americans had a unique relationship with the bison. It was revered by them and provided for many of their basic needs. Nothing was waisted. When I see photos of dead bison pilled high by hunters hired by the American Government to commit genocide of the Native Americans I boil with anger. Not only by bringing the bison to near extension, but to the way our Native American brothers and sisters were treated.
The bison is in my opinion an incredible creature. They can stand 5 to 6.5 feet at the shoulder. They can weigh up to 2,000 pound. But, despite their size they are quick on their feet and can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. They can turn on a dime and be extremely dangerous.
I am also impressed with with many ranchers including Ted Turner are doing in bringing the population of the bison back to a sustainable number. Our National Park Department has also been instrumental in bringing the bison back. And one of the best places to see the bison is at Yellowstone Park.
So, from time to time, you will see a picture of a bison in my gallery. Enjoy!
